If your story has nothing big to lose, it’s not worth reading. I did say “Big.” I’m not talking about a nice pair of earrings, a car, designer dress, or even your home. I’m talking about something that matters greatly to more than your main character. It’s bigger than her, him, or it. It takes hold and drives your story to the end.

This crucial thing is bigger than a personal love spat, or even a trip to the hospital. It takes over a life, a family, a city, the community, or an entire nation. In popular women’s novels, that thing is not the community, city, or nation; it’s your character’s personal desire. Did she get the man? The career? The family she wanted? It’s all about the protagonist’s unrequited desire. It might not seem big at all, except that the heroine’s creator has infused her with such unrelenting intensity that the reader feels her desire just as strongly as murder, the city, the country, the family she wanted.

That particular element in your novel is called STAKES. It’s believed that a threat to LIFE is the highest stake. Bestseller-kind-of books have high stakes of some kind. STAKES simply means the biggest thing you have to lose—the fortune, friend, life, city, a country, a world, a dream.

If you don’t believe me, let’s explore a few bestseller-kind-of-books that have stood the test of time and see what really drives them and how it plays out.

The Godfather—what does he have to lose? Justice in America. Godfather wanted justice so badly that he had to take getting it into his own hands. He just couldn’t afford not to have justice when his father was murdered by the mob in Italy, and his mother was shot in front of his face while she begged for her son’s life. He was never going back to that kind of injustice. He was shipped off to American, and here he faced another kind of injustice. So he turned to crime, while wanting his son to become a legal senator. The search for justice drove the story all the way through a multi-million dollar best selling book and three movies. The don lost his life but the stakes were so high that they transferred to his youngest son, Michael. He had to kill five mafia heads to become semi-laundered when he moved to Vegas.

GONE WITH THE WIND: Scarlett’s love was at stake. Many people think it was Tara, the plantation. But no, it was love. This was no ordinary love. The writer knew the normal kind of love would have fallen flat on its face “Well if you don’t love me back, forget you. I can have any man I want. See?” She said, looping her arm in one of the Tarlton boy’s arm.

No, this was an obsessive love that burned with the heat of determination and passion. It was Ashley Wilkes or nobody. This strong, bold, uncompromising love drove the story because her love was at stake. It could be lost or consummated at any moment and the reader didn’t want to miss it—all the way to the end. That’s why we followed. If Ashley had given her the time of day, there’s no way I would have read 700 pages about the Civil War. But with Scarlett’s thirst for true love, her raging fire for consummation, it absorbed the culture, the complexities of war, and life on a plantation that no one wanted to see and all of the reader’s tiredness. Love was at stake and it drove that story for years and years.

THE MAYOR’S WIFE WORE SAPPHIRES—a search for respect drove the story. Indigo did everything possible in this world to grab some respect for herself, her family, and her city. If she could sneak her husband into congress, she could obtain it. The story opens with her trying to make that happen. When her plan falls through, she schemes every possible means of making that predominately African-American city a Camelot—a place so incredible that the residents would be trained to manufacture and market their wares, and people from all over the world would come and buy from them. Indigo had knock-off clothes tailored for all of her parties, and hung with the “right” crowd to gain that elusive respect. She fought off the International drug cartel to save the city from its ugliness and ruin. All for respect. She lost lovers and friends, but the need for respect still drove that story all the way to the White House and back.

What is at stake in your novel? It can be physical or emotional. Write it down now.

Beating Stress with Martial Arts

Beating Stress with Martial Arts

Are you a busy executive or mom trying to do everything? Are you getting so stressed out that it seems like you’re not accomplishing anything? If so, you can use martial arts to combat that stress! Many of the skills and techniques used in martial arts training are the same skills and techniques you can use to rid your body of stress.

So, you might be wondering how a skill that is commonly depicted as a fighting tool can actually reduce stress… Some of these common images of martial arts aren’t completely accurate. The cartoons, video games and movies showing martial arts as a fighting tool are only showing you one small facet of the art. The skills necessary for training martial arts can teach you how to balance your mind and body and give you the confidence you need to face the stressful events in your life.

One of the techniques used to create this balance is using breathing and meditation techniques to help you connect and control your mind and body. There are different types of meditation: sitting, standing, kneeling and moving. Find the position that works best for you. Here’s how to start.

1. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.

2. Breathe deeply. To make sure you’re breathing deeply enough, put your hand on your stomach. If your stomach isn’t pushing out as you breath in, you’re not breathing deeply enough. Try to pull the air all the way to your navel before you let it out.

3. When you breathe out, keep your tongue on the roof of your mouth. This keeps helps minimize your saliva and swallowing.

In the Chinese way of thinking, breathing like this is completing a path: The mouth is a gate and the tongue on the roof of the mouth allows your vital energy called “Qi” or “Chi” (both pronounced “chee”) to circulate throughout your body. Chi is what helps your mind and body connect.

After you’ve gotten the physical aspects of breathing down, you can start counting your breaths – this is a form of meditation that many experts teach during stress management courses. Start short and work your way up.

1. Begin with a count of 4 as you breathe in and a count of 6 as you breathe out.

2. As you go along, extend the in and out until you can get a count of 6 as you breathe in and up to 24-30 as you breathe out. Just remember that you want a short, deep breath in and a slow, long breath out.

This mind and body connection through breathing works because stress is a mental state that manifests itself as a physical symptom in your body. This physical symptom then acts as a trigger to tell you to do something about it. As you become more aware of your body, you’ll be able to notice the “trigger” before it becomes something unbearable such as a severe neck problem or a migraine headache. Once you notice your trigger, you can stop and do something about it such as practicing a breathing technique. For example, I used to get stress-induced migraines that would leave me out of commission for a whole day. Now, I’ve come to realize that it actually starts in my lower back as a small thing. If I let it go, it works its way up to my head. Now, when I noticed this trigger in my back, I stop and do my breathing. It allows the issue to surface so I can deal with it and I don’t have to deal with a migraine.

We all have those moments from time to time when we experience stress (some more frequently than others). The overall benefits of training martial arts for the mind and body (including self-awareness, self confidence, focus, concentration and physical conditioning) all lead to reducing that stress. You owe it to yourself to start relieving the stress in your life with the skills taught through martial arts. The best place to find these skills is at a fine martial arts school. Why not give it a try? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. To make it even easier, I’ll help you get started. Just contact me and I’ll send you my free report on how to pick a martial arts school.

When you are in your thirties and still single

When you are in your thirties and still single

Desiree, 34, a freelance interior decorator and a Martha Stewart fanatic, goes on a trip every holiday season to visit her parents in Bedford, Indiana. She usually arrives a week before Christmas Eve. Holidays were supposed to be happy events, but not for Desiree. She dreaded the holiday season which means she has to face the questions again from her own parents and relatives. Family reunions makes her feel so uncomfortable because everyone from her teenage niece to an assortment of cousins are already “taken.” That time of the year, she always found herself on the spot for being the only single person in family.

It doesn’t help to see your own father in the corner looking at you, as if he was asking: “What is wrong with you?” Your mother also pretends not to hear the most frequently asked question in the house whenever you have guests: “Is your daughter married?”

Single and unattached…biological clock ticking. This is the dilemma faced by Desiree and the exact source of all her stress and anxiety.

After the holidays, she always ends up with the conclusion that there is no room for a single white female in a family that expects all women to be married; and no room in her circle of friends who all have their own boyfriends and flings. People around her, she concluded, looked at her as someone who kissed dating goodbye.

Yes, there are many Desirees out there waiting for their “someone” to come along. But are they waiting in vain?

Career women, once they realize they are not getting any younger, immediately panic and think that they have already been left behind in the game of love. Once they realize that they too yearn for the comforts of a loving relationship, career women begin to take more time for social interaction… hoping to meet someone who could free them from the Single Life. Women, mostly in their thirties, have already realized that “singlehood” has already lost its novelty.

But its not just the single women who feel this way. Even single parents like Terry, a thirty-something attractive chef and mother of twins also miss the security and warmth of being in a relationship. Life is tough for her especially since her twin boys miss their father so much.

But there is always hope for the single and separated.

There is no need to sulk because you are in a “single” situation. At this time in your life, it is good to consider the following recommendations:

l Love yourself – Take care of your well being. Pamper yourself. It needs not to be expensive—a trip to your favorite coffee shop or restaurant will do the trick. keep yourself busy like doing volunteer work that way you won’t be staying home always and feeling sorry for yourself. Another depression stopper is listening to music. Listen to soothing music like jazz and bossa nova accompanied by a bottle of red wine.

l Shopping Therapy- Women finds it therapeutic when shopping. It sounds superficial but even in a low budget. You can get “high” canvassing for fashionable clothes and accessories. Don’t forget that beautiful pair of red shoes.

l Stop, Look, Listen – Don’t think you have to join the “race” to find the perfect man. Chances are you’re Prince Charming might be found in an unlikely places and probably and caught in between your unguarded moment when you don’t look at your best. Don’t try so hard to be with anyone, you’ll just end up being disappointed.

l Be with other single women- Just think how “Sex in the City” becomes a hit t.v series. There is something “magical” when you are surrounded by your well meaning single friends. You can get together and have some fun like watching movies or invited them over to your house and eat a home cooked meal and laugh your way out from being all alone.

l Don’t get in touch with your ex- resist the urge even if you get pressured from family and friends from time to time. Getting back at your ex because you can’t stand being alone especially during holidays is one pathetic move.

l Acceptance – Being bitter and resentful only adds to your stress and anxiety. Being angry about being along, finding the wrong man or being separated won’t helped but only add fuel to the fire. Enjoy what you have, no matter how little you have. Accept that being single might have some advantages and purpose. We just get caught up with what other people say.

Get a grip…being single shouldn’t be “the end of the world.”

What’s The Lowdown On Airline Flight Attendant Jobs?

What’s The Lowdown On Airline Flight Attendant Jobs?

Airline flight attendants have been glamorized in film and books for decades – ever since the first stewardess pinned on her wings and greeted a passenger at the gate. We all know what airline flight attendant jobs are like, don’t we? After all, we’ve seen the movies and read the books. Flight attendants lead glamorous lives with parties in every city. They’re always impeccably groomed and ready to fly at a moment’s notice. They get to meet celebrities and take advantage of all sorts of job perks – like free travel.

The realities of the job are a little less glamorous, according to those who work in airline flight attendant jobs. Here’s the real lowdown on airline flight attendant jobs according to the people who should know – airline flight attendants.

Before the flight:

- First call of the day, a briefing of the flight crew by the captain. He’ll fill you in on anything you need to know about that particular flight – evacuation procedures, the rest of the crew, the flight details, expected weather conditions and anything important you need to know about the passengers.

- After the briefing, run a check on safety equipment on board – are all the first aid kits in place and stocked? Does all the safety equipment work properly?

- Check the passenger cabin to make sure that you have everything you need for the passengers during the flight – food, beverages, blankets and more.

Flight time – you’re on!

- You’ll be the first one to greet passengers as the board the plane, and responsible for checking tickets and telling them where to store their coats and carry-ons.

- Once the passengers are seated, you’ll inform them about the emergency equipment and demonstrate how to use it.

- Check each passenger to make sure that they’re safety belts are fastened properly, and all their bags are safely stowed before takeoff.

During the Flight:

- There’s all the normal stuff. You’ll have a schedule worked out with the rest of the cabin crew – usually under the direction of the lead flight attendant – that tells you who will be responsible for which seats and cabins. Your job – as long as nothing unusual happens – is to make sure that the passengers are comfortable and have everything they need. You’ll deliver meals and drinks, distribute pillows, blankets and reading material, answer questions about how to use the reading light, how to recline the seat and where the bathroom is. Except for the fact that you’re up a few thousand feet in the air, it’s a lot like any other service job – until something out of the ordinary happens.

- Sometimes the out of the ordinary is a passenger. You may have mothers or fathers with small children that need an extra helping hand. If you have a disabled passenger on board, you’ll anticipate whatever needs they may have, and take steps to make sure that they’re taken care of.

- Then there are the ‘normal emergencies’ like turbulence. You can expect turbulence often – and when it happens, there are always flyers that are worried – or worse – and need reassurance. Some of them will get sick – your job is to make sure that they’re all right. You’ll also make sure that anyone who gets injured or sick while in the air is taken care of.

- It may never happen – most people working in airline flight attendant jobs never have to worry about all those safety drills and emergency evacuation procedures – but if it does, you need to be ready. In the event of a forced landing, you’re the one who’ll be keeping everyone calm and helping them get off the plane as safely as possible. You’ll also be trained to watch for ‘odd behavior’ that might signal a hijacker or terrorist, and told what to do if you see someone suspicious.

Before the Plane Lands:

- You’ll take inventory of all the equipment to make sure that it’s there and accounted for.

After Landing:

Even after the plane lands, you’re job isn’t done. You get to help the passengers deplane, and then check the plane for any articles left behind. There are post flight reports to fill out, and information to be conveyed to the captain and crew. It’s a surprisingly long day for a flight that may be as little as a few hours – but every bit of it is necessary.

Planning a Three Day Vacation

Planning a Three Day Vacation

Its wintertime and Christmas will soon be over, and then the winter blahs set in. You want to get away from it all, but will you have the Christmas bills to pay? You don’t have money for airfare and you don’t really have any more vacation time to take off from work. What’s your solution?

How about a getaway in your own hometown? I bet there are activities in your hometown that you haven’t taken advantage of. You know they are there; you often take them for granted. People from other areas come to visit the sites that you look past every day.

You take three days to take a breather from the hectic schedule you’ve been under and enjoy a three-day vacation right in your own hometown. If you have a little money to spend, why not get a hotel room in a hotel with an indoor pool, if you live in the part of the country that has snow and ice this time of year. Most hotels offer Continental breakfasts for their guests and you are already aware of the spots in town where you can eat for a reasonable price.

If you’re really stuck for money, stay at home. Let the answering machine take all messages, don’t turn on your computer and only carry your cell phone for emergency calls. You more than likely have voice messaging for that as well. You can relax in your own home and watch movies, eat popcorn and just enjoy the peace and quiet.

In my hometown, there is a place where you can take nature hikes through the woods and enjoy the beauty of the year. I also know that our area is rich in history because we are in the heart of Lincoln country. Some attractions in my area that highlight the early life of Abraham Lincoln I regret not taking the time to visit.

Do you pass a historical home every day on your way back and forth to work? The best day I ever had was when my youngest son picked me up and took me to one of the historic old homes in my own hometown. There are still homes and sites I would like to visit. I didn’t know for a long time that there is a very nice bed and breakfast. That would be wonderful for an overnight stay and there’s basically no travel involved.

Do you have museums in your area? There are sure to be some in your town or nearby and only need a little research to uncover them. Thinking of that, I can immediately bring to mind at least five museums within a 50-mile radius that I haven’t taken the opportunity to visit.

Have you taken the opportunity to explore all of your city’s parks? I found that one of our parks has a beautiful bike and walking trail. Take advantage of free events. Your local paper would be a good resource to find out what is happening in your area. My city has a Local Arts Council that has activities going on all the time. Have you checked out your local library? Why not take the kids for a visit there; it would be a good experience for them. Let them sit at a table and browse through the wonderful world of children’s literature. My library also has exhibits during certain times of the year that are both educational and entertaining.

Search your area for attractions that are within a set radius from your home. Day trips are an easy and fun way to get away from it all and spend quality time with your family. You don’t have to spend a lot of money; you can pack snacks and drinks in a cooler and just take off. Come home at night, sleep in your own bed, and go again the next day. The important thing to remember is that you are getting away from your regular routine. It should be fun and not stressful. Choose attractions that you know your family will enjoy and give everyone in your family an opinion about what they want to do or see.

Three-day vacations can be a relaxing and refreshing time for a family. You just need to use a little imagination to make it a great family time and memory.

baby boomers history

The Secrets behind the Baby Boomers Controversial History

Throughout mankind’s history, nothing beats the most egoistic generation-the baby boomers generations. Their history was presented through sayings, vignettes, quotations, and slogans which characterized and shaped them. The pleasure, the pain, and the trauma of times fall right into perspectives.

They protested everything including their civil rights, animal rights, and viewpoint on foreign wars. All through the years, they become witnesses of histories, made a few of it, and later on produced pop cultures treasured with aphorisms. These sayings, quotations, and slogans are the striking view of change and growth.

For them, their rich history lies on their music albums, books, movies, and TV shows greatly remarkable for people who deeply influenced them. These key events are represented in a way that it became a portion of the collective subconscious of many people.

Baby boomers grew up on the most prosperous generation wherein they were protected in small towns and suburbs, enjoying better health as well as expecting fuller, longer lives compared to their predecessors. They live through the greatest and longest period of economic prosperity. However, this way of living only made them see the world through unfulfilled promise, self-doubt, and longing.

Baby boomers become more idealistic than realistic. They became alienated and disillusioned with their country if the things they wanted to happen were not realized. From their infancy, the opportunity of fertile fields lay beneath their feet offering them with growing wonders and asking them to use it in the best way they can. But they suffered when their parents protected and pampered them only to build a generation that is free from deprivation and fear. As a result, they gave birth inadvertently to two split waves of egocentric activists, the leftist and the rightist produced along the continued series of counterrevolutions and cultural revolutions.

The distinctiveness of baby boomers born after the World War II cannot be denied. They were set out in saving the world reaching up to a population of 76 million. It was because experts predicted that the birthrate declines in America would continue. When men of WWII return home, it was settled that the safe and old routine of bearing children should be again adopted. The agreement was a freak incidence caused by material affluence, war victory, fear of loss, and youthful optimism.

Baby boom was also caused by the Cold War in the 1950′s giving emphasis on family’s strengths and moms staying at home, getting pregnant, and attending to the kitchen. Even after the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombing, almost 16 million GIs returned to America. Moreover, the amount of babies born per month reached 338,000. It was been said that the 1945 population of babies was increased to one million, then from 1954 to 1957, four million baby boomers was born peaking at 4.3 million. The census reveals that there are 38,038,000 men and 38,503,000 women in their ranks, 61 million are white, 9 million are black, and the remaining 6 million are comprise of the Asian, Indian, and Hispanic race. Most of them are proud to belong to the elite cohort.

Baby boomers attended their elementary as well as secondary education during the 50′s and 60′s. Some boomers were even called to serve in the Vietnam War, others just entered their adulthood, and some are already working. Somehow, women baby boomers held off marriage to give way to their careers.

The second wave of baby boomers (1958 onwards) doesn’t have a strong generational identity compared to the first wave. Generation Gap occurred since their elders don’t trust these baby boomers. The first wave became hippies while the second wave became punks. Both waves express their dissatisfaction of the world but they entirely assumed the American Dream in different dimensions. First wave baby boomers surpassed or equaled the standard living of their parents. The second wave was the exact opposite, they rely more for financial support from their parents.

They established their beliefs that someday they will run the country’s institutions, redefine old age and retirement, generate more money, and experience extraordinary leisure. However, baby boomers never close the possibilities of receiving all kinds of mockery and generational gauntlet challenging them to rise in their golden promise. Baby boomers really take their part in the transformation of the society.

Camping – The Ultimate Budget Vacation

Camping – The Ultimate Budget Vacation

When it comes to enjoying a vacation on a limited budget, it is difficult to beat the appeal of the good old camping trip. After all, it costs next to nothing to pitch your tent in the back country wilderness of your favorite state or national park. A week long camping trip can often cost less than a day or two in a big city or tourist hot spot, while giving the entire family time to bond and enjoy being together.

As a matter of fact, camping is one of the most popular family activities, and many families enjoy camping together, sharing stories around a roaring fire, roasting marshmallows, swimming, fishing and all the other great things that come with a camping trip.

For many, camping brings back memories from childhood, and many parents want to give their children a taste of what their own childhood was like, back when things were so much simpler.

Another great thing about camping is that once the initial expenses are paid, there is little in the way of ongoing expenses. Unlike a traditional vacation, in which the money you spend on that great hotel is gone for good, with camping you buy your hotel room (also known as your tent) outright, and you own it forever.

After you have bought all the essential items, like the tent, a couple of good camping lanterns, a good camp stove, sleeping bags and the like, your only expenses may be the food for the trip and the gas it takes to get there.

And camping provides plenty for all members of the family to do. Dad may enjoy fishing in his favorite spot, or boating around the lake, while mom and the kids may enjoy a beautiful hike and bird watching trip. There are even campgrounds that feature movies, swimming pools and other amenities for those who prefer a level of comfort to their journey.

As a matter of fact, there are many ways to camp, from rough camping in the back country to cabins at campgrounds to even RV camping. The level is entirely up to you, and that is one thing that makes camping so attractive to budget travelers and families alike.

There is nothing quite like vacationing in the great outdoors to get back in touch with nature. From watching the wildlife to watching the stars, there is plenty to do on the average camping trip. Stargazing is particularly popular with city dwellers, who may never have seen the Milky Way in all its glory before. Getting away from the glare of city lights and see nature as it truly is.

We know that camping is one of the least expensive of all vacations, but lets take a quick look at the expenses associated with this type of budget travel. The centerpiece of the camping trip, of course, is the tent. Unless you plan to camp in an RV or rent a cabin, which is more expensive, you will need a sturdy, high quality tent. It is important that the tent be waterproof and that it close easily. Be sure the tent features a high quality zipper or other closure that is easy for every member of the family to operate. Test the zipper several times, and be sure you know how to set up the tent before you get to the woods.

Most campers will also want to invest in a few high quality sleeping bags. It is a good idea to choose a sleeping bag that is insulated, and to pick one that will be good for several seasons. Many sleeping bags are designed with removable liners and insulation. These are a good choice, since they can be used in cold weather and warm.

It is also a good idea to buy a couple of camp lanterns. These portable lights are great for lighting your way around in the dark. A cooler for drinks and food is a good idea as well, as is a portable charcoal grill or camp stove. If you are camping at a campground, however, you may be able to leave the camp stove and grill at home, since many campgrounds provide grills for their guests to use free of charge. It is important to find out what amenities each campground offers before you head out.

Because of this concept, they have been able to produce larger ships, which started from the launch of the Carnival Destiny in 1996. It displaces an estimate of 101,000 tons, making it the largest passenger ship in the world, rivaling aircraft carriers for size.

CCL are also known among their passengers for their towel animals. Their trademark is a funnel with the combination of red, white, and blue colors and shaped like a whale’s tail.

CCL’s mascot is named as Fun Ship Freddy, a character in the shape of the Carnival funnel.

Cruise Ship Activities for Children under Twelve

Cruise Ship Activities for Children under Twelve

Each year, a large number of individuals make the decision to take a cruise. Cruise ships are a great location to have your next vacation. If given the opportunity, many parents would choose to take a cruise alone. This isn’t because of a lack of love, but because of a common misconception among parents and cruise ships. Many individuals, including parents, believe that cruise ships are not designed for children, but that is simply not true.

If you are the parent of a child under the age of twelve, you may be wondering whether or not they should accompany you on your next cruise. If you are able to financially afford an additional ticket, you are encouraged to consider bring your child along. Not only will a cruise be memorable to your child, but it will be exciting. That is because a large number of cruise lines have tailored their cruise ships to children of all ages, including those under the age of twelve.

If you have yet to book your cruise ship reservations, you are encouraged to keep cruise ship activities in mind. The activities for children, under the age of twelve, will vary from ship to ship. That is why it is important that you examine each ship before making a final decision. Despite the fact that activities will vary from ship to ship, there are many activities geared towards children, under the age of twelve, which can be found on almost all cruise ships.

One of the many popular activities found aboard a cruise ship is a gaming. Arcade rooms are common on most cruise ships.
