American Film Schools

American Film Schools

American film schools have a rich history dating back to the 1970s, when there was little chance to get film education. The only option to gain knowledge was to go to Hollywood at a young age and work along with people in the industry. By the 1970s, many major universities began to offer classes in film technology. Over the years, many film schools have opened with numerous educational programs that provide actual industry experience along with education.

American film schools are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST). The schools are commonly departments of universities, divisions of colleges or separate schools. There are some privately owned film schools as well that are not connected to American universities. Most of the schools provide undergraduate and graduate degree programs and some have graduate programs only. Various techniques involved in movie making, including film production, film theory and screen writing are taught. Hands-on practical knowledge and intern programs are included as part of studies.

Some schools are considered top in the nation. New York Film Academy, Los Angeles Film School, USA Film School, San Francisco School of Digital Filmmaking, and FSU Film School are among them. These schools are located in prime areas of cities including New York and Los Angeles, and provide better education and have good infrastructure. But studying in these schools is quite expensive.

Founded in 1929, The University of Southern California’s School of Cinema-Television is the oldest film school in the nation. Some other good schools are the American Film Institute (AFI), California Institute of the Arts, Columbia University School of the Arts, The North Carolina School of the Arts, and the schools at New York University (NYU), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and University of Texas at Austin.

What About The Cannes Festival And Film Making?

What About The Cannes Festival And Film Making?

For 12 days in the month of May the city of Cannes celebrates the National Film Agency. The town is filled to capacity with more than 200,000 film makers, stargazers, and film fans, who gather on the Croisette to attend the Cannes Film Festival. During the 12 day span thousands of films are screened, careers are started, and disappointment shows itself. Stars the world over come to get their share of attention.

Since the 1950′s when Brigitte Bardot ran on the beach for the cameras in her teenie bikini, Cannes has blossomed to celebrate the worlds most favorite pastimes, cinema and sex. Cannes has grown to be the most famous of all festivals of film. Cannes is spectacular with the palm trees, red carpets, stars that come out to sparkle in the flash of paparzzi cameras, and the famed celebrity parties.

Cannes may not look like the best place to host the world’s most famous film festival. Cinema was invented in France, Paris France. The weather in Cannes is nice, but that is not the best selling point. The Cannes Film Festival exists as a result of the rise of fascism in Europe during the 1930′s. In 1932 the first competitive film festival was sponsored in Venice. This was called the Mostra di Venezia, and the awards it gave, was mostly about the prestige of the countries that participated, as it was about the films. As time went by, the fascist alliances in certain countries received favoritism when it came to judging the films and giving of awards.

In 1938 Jean Renoir’s “La Grande Illusion” was passed by for the top prize in the festival, despite being the obvious favorite of the festival attendees, and the jury members. Instead the award was given to two films, a two-part German film called “Olympia”, commissioned by Joseph Goebbels to show the Nazi success of the 1938 Berlin Olympics, and “Luciano Serra, Pilota, made with the supervision of Il Duces son. When the announcement came, the French were furious and withdrew from the festival. The American and British jury members resigned to protest the fact that fascism could walk all over artistic excellence.

Later that same year, a group of film makers and critics petitioned the French government to put run an alternative, international film festival in France. A festival where film makers could show their films and compete without censorship or bias. The French government was not very happy about going against Mussolini, and were dragging their feet. The group kept putting pressure on the government, and they finally gave consent to the event.

The competition is the main event of the festival today, this is where the glory and glamour come in. The films screened are referred to as being “in competition”. The most coveted award is the Golden Palm for best picture. This is one of the most prestigious awards on earth, and will give the film a huge boost. For low budget films and novice film makers, this can mean millions of extra dollars at the international box office, for foreign films it brings worldwide distribution. The competition is usually open to narrative films only, but there are times when a documentary is introduced. Michael Moore’s ” Fahrenheit 9/ 11″ won the top prize in 2004. The film makers are welcome to enter both features and shorts. There are awards in each category.

Istanbul film festival in april 2008

The first section when film-makers were expected to send their works ended in December and the Staff is now undergoing all preparations to be ready by April for this 2008 Film Festival. The organization estimates that for this festival there will be around 200 films competing for different sections. Here the list:

International Competition section, reserved for feature length fiction or documentary films or animations. In order to be included in this section and compete for the “Golden Tulip” award, authors/film-makers have to focus their attention on themes on “arts” or “the artist”, and literary adaptations.

There is a particular section where films shown in other leading festivals (including many award-winning) will be projected at the World of Festivals Section

In competition also the films at the Human Rights in Cinema Section that comprises both documentaries and features investigating the politics behind social and individual life changes.

Other NON-competitive sections are the Retrospective section & the Tributes section where tributes to a film-maker influential to film history are selected, The Mined Zone section reserved for innovative, unconventional and unique fiction films in terms of style or content and Masters of the Future Section featuring works by new directors who received critical acclaim

Beside the International competition there’s also the National Competition for recent Turkish films: Turkish Cinema.

As the Istanbul International Film festival keeps evolving every year, the sections of the festival are of course subject to change.

In the words of French poet Alphonse de Lamartine, if one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul. Indeed, this is a city of astonishing beauty. Its architecture, cuisine, history and culture make up a fascinating tapestry of yesterday and very much tomorrow.

A metropolitan capital with an imperial history stretching back for over 1500 years, Istanbul is today the commercial, historical and cultural core of Turkey. But most of all, it’s a buzzing, living-breathing metropolis that is knocking at the doors of the European Union. It won’t be hard to find a suitable accommodation (there are many youth hostels for backpackers or travellers on a budget up to enchanting hotels featuring Turkish interior designs, typical pieces of furniture, mosaics, spa and thermal baths at affordable prices). Film is still a relative newcomer in the pantheon of fine arts

Film is still a relative newcomer in the pantheon of fine arts

While motion picture films have been around for more than a century, film is still a relative newcomer in the pantheon of fine arts. In the 1950s, when television became widely available, industry analysts predicted the demise of local movie theaters. Despite competition from television’s increasing technological sophistication over the 1960s and 1970s, such as the development of color television and large screens, motion picture cinemas continued. In the 1980s, when the widespread availability of inexpensive videocassette recorders enabled people to select films for home viewing, industry analysts again wrongly predicted the death of the local cinemas.

In the 1990s and 2000s the development of digital DVD players, home theater amplification systems with surround sound and subwoofers, and large LCD or plasma screens enabled people to select and view films at home with greatly improved audio and visual reproduction. These new technologies provided audio and visual that in the past only local cinemas had been able to provide: a large, clear widescreen presentation of a film with a full-range, high-quality multi-speaker sound system. Once again industry analysts predicted the demise of the local cinema. Local cinemas will be changing in the 2000s and moving towards digital screens, a new approach which will allow for easier and quicker distribution of films (via satellite or hard disks), a development which may give local theaters a reprieve from their predicted demise.

The cinema now faces a new challenge from home video by the likes of a new DVD format Blu-ray, which can provide full HD 1080p video playback at near cinema quality. Video formats are gradually catching up with the resolutions and quality that film offers, 1080p in Blu-ray offers a pixel resolution of 1920?1080 a leap from the DVD offering of 720?480 and the paltry 330?480 offered by the first home video standard VHS. The maximum resolutions that film currently offers are 2485?2970 or 1420?3390, UHD, a future digital video format, will offer a massive resolution of 7680?4320, surpassing all current film resolutions. The only viable competitor to these new innovations is IMAX which can play film content at an extreme 10000?7000 resolution.

Despite the rise of all new technologies, the development of the home video market and a surge of online piracy, 2007 was a record year in film that showed the highest ever box-office grosses. Many expected film to suffer as a result of the effects listed above but it has flourished, strengthening film studio expectations for the future.

Choosing a Good School – Is It Necessary to Make a Feature Film?

Choosing a Good School – Is It Necessary to Make a Feature Film?

Many, many, and even many more filmmakers have all attempted to get into a prestigious school. The result is that a few are accepted and many others are turned away. There is only so much space sadly; this does not always have to mean the kiss of death for a filmmaker though. A good vision and a determination to learn and grow can overcome even being passed up at a film school. It may put the filmmaker at a slight disadvantage, but many others consider it a good idea to bypass film school.

You might be curious about exactly why it would be considered a benefit to bypass film school. After all, don’t successful film makers need to go to school in order to learn how to create a film? The truthful answer is that while film school can be a very valuable asset to have, it is not something that is required. The internet as well as connections can go a long way towards providing you with all of the information that film school would offer you. This can save you a lot of money, plus allow you additional time to really look into all of your options for creating a film exactly how you want to.

Film making school can be a huge asset for many filmmakers, and it is not something that should be completely discounted. However the costs can often far outweigh the benefits to the program and will ensure that you are able to really develop your own create style. One of the complaints that many film makers have is film school teaches how to create films in all the same manner, this can often limit the creativity of each person. While at the same time, going to film school has also served as a great way to open the eyes of many people into new options that are available.

Working with all of the details that come into effect is very important, after all film schools are notorious for packing information into a very short period of time. A lot of work is done in regards to the various aspects of making a film from the very start until the completed process, which can make it quite easy to learn as much as possible about the entire process. It is critical to the development of many filmmakers to have this experience because often skipping film school has the effect that filmmakers are only learning about a very limited area of the process.

Most filmmakers who are working entirely without professional experience find that they are working with a very limited range of experience that can ultimately harm their movies. Working around these limitations is extremely important to the overall success of most projects but is not always easy to do. If a filmmaker is willing to take constructive criticism it is much easier to actually create the wonderful pieces that will serve to build their creative process. If you find that you absolutely want the experience of going to a film school you need to make certain that you select a school that you feel comfortable at. This might seem like a small issue, but in fact it is quite large.

Being uncomfortable at your chosen film school can really reduce the amount of creativity that you have. You are spending more of your time trying to fit in or make yourself at home, rather than focusing on improving your film making skills. Spending a large amount of time searching over the different film school options available to you will help you to determine which school fits your needs the best. Always remember that you need to ask as many questions as possible, which can allow you to really get a good overall feel for the school, prior to signing up for classes. Picking the right film school can have a huge impact on your career, so choosing carefully is very important if you choose to go this route.

Is Software Necessary in Feature Film Creation?

Is Software Necessary in Feature Film Creation?

People who are unaware of the entire process of creating a feature film might think that there is no need at all for a computer or even software. After all great filmmakers in the past simply used a camera and manually edited the movies to create the great masterpieces of yesterday. Today’s filmmakers though have a wide expanse of equipment available to them, as well as hundreds if not thousands of incredible special effects. Because of this, it is quite necessary for filmmakers to use technology now that was previously unused in the field.

One of the best examples of this is the usage of the computer and in turn software that is used to alter images and create incredible special effects. While many special effects are the creation of actual equipment and skill there are many others that are actually created in the editing process using a computer, software and the video footage that was shot. This can allow you to take a very simple video and add in virtually unlimited options to your videos. Because of this the usage of computers and by extension software in the making of feature films is heavily explored and used by virtually all filmmakers now.

Using the technology involved in video editing you can create seamless transitions, instant splices and even create interesting overlays in your films, which can add a lot of visual appeal. This is all technology that is directly related to the advances in the film industry that many filmmakers currently enjoy. While many of the advances in technology are not cheap there are others that can be purchased quite inexpensively which makes it very easy for even beginner film makers to start purchasing the software and equipment needed to create very professional films.

At a minimum, most filmmakers find that they need to have software to help them with editing needs. The majority also using software for special effects and even interesting effects in their films, but having the ability to edit footage at a minimum is something that is considered a necessity rather than just a luxury. While in the old days of feature films the footage was edited manually, it was also a reality that films were recorded on actual reels of film. Most footage for amateurs and many professionals as well is now recorded in a digital format. This requires the need to have software that can handle the specific requirements of the digital format and enable you to get the most usage possible from all footage that you have.

Further needs that many filmmakers have is the need to adjust sound levels of the filmed footage that they have. While typically using various sound equipment during recording can provide great results, there are times when directors may wish to reduce volume or even raise the volume of specific scenes. Having this ability is a huge asset that is entirely possible through the usage of software. It is also possible to add various sound effects into the films and even cut out various sound pieces as well which can allow for a completely customized process.

With all of the technology and equipment that is available to film makers today the reality that you need software is quite clear. The type of software that you need to create the feature films varies substantially based upon your exact requirements. In general, you can expect the software that you select to be a huge purchase that will be quite expensive. However, the return you receive in regards to your time, quality of your feature films and even the editing and altering options available to you is extremely extensive and makes the need to use software a very minor issue for most filmmakers. Regardless of your impression of technology, most can agree that without the use of software, feature films are much harder to make and are much lower in quality. A great piece of software can change average footage into a spectacular masterpiece that becomes a treasured asset.
